La FDA no tenía suficiente información para solicitar a los productores que retiraran del mercado sus lechugas, dijo el comisionado de la agencia Scott Gottlieb. Pero agregó que los supermercados y restaurantes deben retirar los productos hasta que se pueda identificar la contaminación.
No se han reportado muertes, pero 13 de las personas que se enfermaron en Estados Unidos se encuentran hospitalizadas. La última enfermedad reportada fue el 31 de octubre.
Localizar la fuente de la lechuga contaminada puede ser difícil debido a que a menudo es reempaquetada por intermediarios, señaló Sarah Sorscher, directora adjunta de asuntos regulatorios del Centro para la Ciencia en el Interés Público. Ello puede significar que toda la industria se vea implicada en los brotes, incluso si no todos los productos están contaminados.
